Forty years ago, it was common for children
to walk or bike to school. Today most children ride to school on a bus or are delivered by their parents. According to research from the Centers of Disease Control, in 2001 only 16% of students walked or
biked to school.
The State of Georgia is working to promote physical activity among students, improve air quality, and to improve traffic conditions around school communities. To do this,
schools and communities have begun participating in the Safe Routes to School program. The goals of this program are:
- to enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
- to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age; and
- to facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity
(approximately 2 miles) of primary and middle schools (Grades K-8).
