The Planning Division encompasses a rapidly growing Geographic Information System (GIS) program, a historic preservation program, and a staff composed of uniquely qualified personnel. This
division's mission is primarily the completion of state agency contractual obligations and the provision of a diverse array of local technical assistance projects.
The GIS program is establishing a digital data base of geographic information for the region. Street, utility, and census databases are all being developed region
wide. City and County maps are frequently provided to local governments. GIS contracts with state agencies, local governments, private sector companies, and local health departments
are all resulting in the development of more detailed data for public use.
The Historic Preservation Program continually works to preserve Southeast Georgia's cultural and architectural heritage. This
program has contributed to the preservation of several historic courthouses and other structures in the region.
Local Comprehensive Plans and subsequent updates with accompanying Short Term Work programs are developed, allowing local governments to maintain their Qualified Local Government status.
The Planning Division is responsible for preparing and updating the Southeast Georgia Regional Plan.
